Scholarship Opportunities 

We offer over 120 scholarships yearly to Monroe County residents (now including 11 additional Milan scholarships)

Application season opens on December 1, 2023. The deadline to apply for the 2024-2025 academic year is February 21, 2024.  Please click on apply here for other scholarships to learn which ones you qualify for.

In addition to the general scholarships listed above, we offer the following targeted scholarships, funded by different community groups. To apply, check the requirements and click the “apply” button next to each scholarship.

Dr. Annetta Kelley Scholarship Fund

Endowed by Dr. Kelley, this fund provides scholarships to 8th grade graduates from MCES who will be attending SMCC High School in Monroe.  Recipients shall be based on their grade scores and leadership qualities, resulting in achievement potential.

“Heart of the Badge” Criminal Justice Police Academy Training Scholarship

For Monroe County residents attending the Criminal Justice Program at MCCC who have been accepted into the Wayne County Regional Police Training Academy at Schoolcraft College.

Mary Daume Scholarship Fund

Endowed by the Monroe County Library System in honor of Mary Daume to provide scholarships to Monroe County residents. Student must be pursuing a degree in library science.

Milt & Sally Knabusch Ministerial & Parochial School Teacher Endowed Scholarship Fund

Endowed by Milt Knabusch for those students in Monroe County who have expressed a desire to pursue full-time careers working in churches and schools of any Lutheran denomination as Pastors, Teachers, Deaconess, Family Life Minister, Directors of Christian Education or Parish Lay Specialist, Assistant or Minister.

Monroe County Bar Association Scholarship

This fund was endowed by the Monroe County Bar Association. The fund provides scholarships to Monroe County graduates and/or residents who have been accepted by and are attending an accredited school of law in the United States.

Rewarding Academic Excellence (RAE) “Why is America Exceptional” College Scholarship

A scholarship for Monroe Public Schools junior and senior  National Honor Society student whereby they would submit an essay titled Why is America Exceptional – There are people from all over the world who want to come to the United States to live—the U.S. has been a melting pot since its inception. Please write about a person, group, or event from the period 1700-1900 that, in your estimation, helped to shape this country into a unique place where freedom and opportunity have come together to allow its citizens to thrive. Tell why you think so and perhaps how you perceive it might have made a difference, especially, to people from other countries who seek to come here and live.

Rewarding Academic Excellence (RAE) Summer Enrichment Scholarship

This scholarship is for Monroe Public School students in grades 3-8 who are interested in pursuing, in greater depth, academic subjects beyond those available in the classroom. Awards of up to $250 per student are available. Students may apply for an opportunity that takes place during the school year or in the summer.

Ryan Wolniewicz Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was endowed by the 2003-04 Bedford Hockey Team, Parents, Alumni & Friends to honor the memory of Ryan Wolniewicz.  This fund awards to a Bedford High School varsity hockey player.

Thelma M. and Joseph N. LaHood, Sr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund

Endowed by Dr. Barbara J. LaHood, this fund provides scholarships to St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary School.

William D. and H. Marie Betrus Smith Scholarship

Alison Smith Avendt, Paul W. Smith, and Nancy E. Williams established the William D. and H. Marie Betrus Smith Scholarship for the Theatrical Arts Endowed Scholarship. The William D and H Marie Betrus Smith Scholarship for the Theatrical Arts Endowed Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarships to enhance the performance quality and technical aspects of theater arts for Monroe County residents. This scholarship will fund the mastery of textual interpretation, voice, and movement. Technical awards are considered when portfolios are submitted with the application.

General Scholarships

Adam Schyllander Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by the Schyllander Family to benefit seniors at Summerfield School with interest in sports and community service and are enrolled in a college, community college or trade school.

Advanced Manufacturing Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established to provide a scholarship to provide training and education in advanced manufacturing (machining, electronics, robotics/automation and welding) to individuals to learn the right skills needed for employment in the Monroe’s geographical region at Monroe County Community College.

Ahadi Women in Science Scholarship

Endowed by Dr. Soudabeh Ahadi, this fund provides an annual scholarship to a female graduating senior of any Monroe County high school who is entering any field of science.

B.D. and Jane E. McIntyre Scholarship

This fund was endowed by the foundation of the same name and Mr. Charles E. McIntyre III. The fund awards annual scholarships to graduates of Monroe County high schools who have been accepted by and are attending Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan.

Brent Ansted Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by the Ansted and Uller family to provide scholarships to graduating Seniors of Bedford High School pursuing a degree in the Liberal Arts anywhere within the US. Preference will be given to those students pursuing the following fields: Computer Design, Graphic Design, Culinary Arts, Photography and Music. A sample portfolio should be included. 

Brooklyn Songco Memorial Scholarship

This fund was endowed by A. Vincent Songco and Michelle Hind Songco to provide scholarships to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Academy students.

Caroline O’Donnell and Judy Heath Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by the O’Donnell & Heath families in 2013 to provide scholarships to Milan High School graduating seniors who wish to pursue a career in the health care field (ie; nurse, doctor, medical technician, occupational or physical therapist, etc).

Charles and Virginia Whitten Scholarship

This endowed fund is awarded to graduating seniors of any Monroe County High School pursuing advanced education in a skilled trades industry at any college.  This scholarship may be renewable for up to four years by application of a past recipient.  Examples of skilled trades:  electrician, machine technician, robotics, carpentry, plumbing, machinist, mechanic, heavy equipment operator, house painter and decorator, pipefitter, construction worker, boilemaker, welder, auto mechanic, bricklayer, baker, interior designer, operator, ironworker, landscape architect, millwright, roofer, sheet metal workers, bus driver, truck driver, farming, agricultural studies. 

Christy Carducci Memorial Scholarship

Funds will be provided to Monroe Public Schools Music Department for students to attend the Toledo Opera.

Community Foundation of Monroe County Scholarship

This endowed fund provides scholarships to an adult resident of Monroe County pursuing advanced education in a skilled trades industry at any college.  May be renewable upon application each year for up to four years.  Examples of skilled trades:  electrician, machine technician, robotics, carpentry, plumbing, machinist, mechanic, heavy equipment operator, house painter and decorator, pipefitter, construction worker, boilemaker, welder, auto mechanic, bricklayer, baker, interior designer, operator, ironworker, landscape architect, millwright, roofer, sheet metal workers, bus driver, truck driver, farming, agricultural studies.   

Damon C. Meyers Scholarship

Endowed to provide scholarships to Monroe County, MI High School Seniors who have been accepted into any program.

David Glenn Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by Pauline Glenn in 2007 to honor her son, David Glenn, who was a Milan High School teacher for many years. It was established to provide scholarships to graduating seniors of MHS who intend to pursue a degree in education.

Dorothy Manausso-Wuest, Gerakd A. Wuest and Jay Wuest Memorial Scholarship

This fund, endowed by Mrs. Dorothy Manausso-Wuest, awards scholarships annually to outstanding graduates of St. Mary Catholic Central High School.  Mrs. Wuest passed away in 2000, but the fund will continue to provide annual scholarships.

Duane and Isabelle Schultz – Milan Area Schools Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed in 2008 by Duane & Isabelle Schultz for Milan High School graduating seniors.

Edward and Andrea Wing Non-Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund at Monroe Catholic Elementary Schools

In memory of Edward and Andrea Wing the Community Foundation established the Edward and Andrea Wing Non-Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund at Monroe Catholic Elementary Schools (MCES). This fund is for members of St. Michael the Archangel Parish whose student is not involved in CYO sports and based on need.

Edward and Andrea Wing Non‐Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Academy

In memory of Edward and Andrea Wing the Community Foundation established the Edward and Andrea Wing Non-Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Academy. This fund is for members of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish whose student is not involved in CYO sports and based on need.

Edward and Sophia Fisher Family Scholarship 

Endowed by Douglas Fisher, Jan Garner and Pam Fraley, this fund is for graduating seniors from Summerfield High School with a minimum of 2.5 GPA who are pursuing a degree or technical certificate at a college, university, community college, or trade school.

Eric Harrison Memorial Scholarship

To honor the memory of their son, Connie & Tim Harrison established this scholarship in 2011 for Milan Area School graduating Seniors. Eric set a very high standard of leadership, friendship, community spirit, school citizenship, and academic success along with a dedication to varsity sports from which his scholarship selection will be based.

Eric Redmond Junior Jets Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by Junior Jets Inc., this scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors at Airport High School enrolling in any university, college, or trade school. This fund awards students majoring in education, business, or a career technical education, having a GPA of at least 3.0.

Ethan C. Jones Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established by Ann Jones in 2006 in honor of Ethan Jones, provides scholarships to graduating seniors of Milan High School striving to be economically independent through higher education.

Ethel Richards Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by the Richards family in 2007 to provide scholarships to Milan High School graduating seniors who wish to major in a business program.

Evelyn Gerstenberg Scholarship

This scholarship, endowed in 2007 by the Gerstenberg Family, was established to provide scholarships to Milan High School graduating seniors who wish to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Graceful Memories Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by the Czarnik family, this scholarship is awarded to students in Monroe County who are high school graduates (or equivalent) who are graduating seniors enrolling in any public university or college. This fund awards students majoring in medicine, demonstrating financial need with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Geri Antonelli Scholarship

Endowed by the Antonelli Family, this fund will provide scholarships to students from St. Charles Grade School. Grades 1-7 are welcome to complete an application.

Grattan and Stephen T. Gray Scholarship

Endowed by the employees of the Monroe Evening News at the time of the completion of their buyout of the paper, this fund provides scholarships to graduates of Monroe County High Schools and high schools in Gibralter, New Boston, Huron, Milan or Flat Rock who are entering the field of journalism.

Gregory Wing Memorial Scholarship

This fund was endowed by Edward and Andrea Wing to provide scholarships to students at St. Charles Catholic Grade School (kindergarten thru 8th grade).

Harold and Helen Rammler Nursing Scholarship

Endowment for those pursuing a nursing career.

Helen and Douglas Darling Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by Helen and Douglas Darling, this scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors at Milan High School enrolling in any university or college. This fund awards students majoring in engineering, agriculture, science, or medicine.

Hon. Harry and Midge Seitz Family Scholarship

Endowed by the Seitz family to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from any Monroe County High School pursuing a degree or certificate in agricultural science, fish and wildlife management, environmental science or a similar course of study.

Ida High School Alumni and Community Scholarship

Endowed by gifts from Ida High School graduates, this fund provides scholarships to graduates of Ida High School who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership and character and have been accepted to pursue a degree at a college, university, or community college.

Irmgard Gertrude Novak Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by Henry and Andrea Werner, this scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors at Monroe High School enrolling in any Michigan public university or college or any reciprocity university or college. This fund awards students majoring in engineering, business, and or medicine, demonstrating financial need, and having a GPA of at least 3.2.

John and Barbara Perion Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by John M “Jack” and Jennifer Perion to provide a scholarship to a graduating senior of Dundee High School Wrestler.  

John E. Dickinson Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by Shannon Dickinson in the name of her father, this fund provides a scholarship to a Flat Rock High School graduating Senior who has been accepted to pursue a degree at a college, university or community college in biology or education.

Judy See Endowed 4-H Scholarship

Endowed by the See family to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from any Monroe County High School pursuing a post secondary degree or certificate of economic value for a Monroe County 4-H member.

LaRocca Family Scholarship

Endowed by the LaRocca Family, this fund provides scholarships to graduating Seniors at Summerfield High School.

Matt Avery Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by Darrell and Linda Polter, this fund will honor the late Matt Avery, a beloved former Summerfield High School baseball player. This fund provides scholarship to graduating seniors of Summerfield High School enrolling in any accredited college or university and demonstrating outstanding character, integrity, and participation in community service. The student must also have participated in Summerfield athletic programs as an athlete and have a minimum GPA of 3.0

Merel F. Keck and Maggie M. Keck Scholarship

Endowed by Merel and Maggie Keck, this fund provides scholarships to female grads attending MCCC nursing program, graduating seniors pursuing a finance degree from any University in Michigan, and a male grad entering into the Southern Baptist Seminary.

Michael A. Tittiger Sustainability & Conservation Scholarship

This scholarship, endowed by Dr. Rachel Butts, was established to provide tuition assistance to Milan High School graduating seniors of minority status who are interested in environmental sustainability and/or conservation.

Michael Newman Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This fund provides scholarships to graduating seniors from any Monroe county private or public school or an adult pursuing a degree in the field of business or finance.

Milan Adult Education Scholarship

This fund was established by Connie Cox in 2013 to assist committed students completing the Milan Adult Education program with tuition and textbook assistance.

Milan Area School Board Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by the Milan Board of Education in 2007 by combining multiple small scholarships, some dating back 50+ years. These scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors of Milan High School who meet the criteria established by the Board of Education.

MSM Scholarship

Scholarship for St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School grades (K-7) and shall be a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish of Erie, MI for one year or has attended the school for one year.

Pakideh/Khaghany Endowed Scholarship

Provides scholarships to graduating seniors from any Monroe County private or public school pursuing a degree at a college, university, or community college in the field of science.

Rich Duvall Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by the family of Rich Duvall to provide scholarships to graduating seniors of Flat Rock High School.

Ronnie and Paulette Shores Scholarship

This scholarship, endowed in 2007 by Nina Pemberton and the Milan Area Schools, was established to provide scholarships to Milan High School graduating seniors who have a physical disability. Verification of the physical disability is required by a medical doctor (MD or DO) and must be submitted with the application.

Robert and Luella Breitner Scholarship

Endowed by the Breitner family, this fund will provide a scholarship to a senior at Summerfield High School that has been accepted at a college or community college on a full time basis, of good moral character and has at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Roy F. Gowman II Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established by Janice Kern, The Roy F. Gowman II Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarships to 8th-grade students from Monroe private or public schools to upgrade their instruments or pay for private lessons.

Roy Sanders Memorial Scholarship

Attending St. Charles Grade School and be a parishioner of St. Charles, St. Anne, or St. Patrick’s Parishes.

Shannon Revel Scholarship

Endowed by Larry and Ila Revel for a senior at a Monroe County public high school that has been accepted in a college in the field of environmental engineering or engineering, has financial need and has at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Spencer and Lucille Wagar Memorial Scholarship

This fund was endowed by Mrs. Christine Stevens to honor her parents. The fund awards annual scholarships to graduates of Monroe High School who have been accepted by and are attending the University of Michigan.

Summerfield Scholarship

This fund was endowed by the Petersburg Alumni Association and is awarded annually to outstanding graduates of Summerfield High School.

Terry L. Goins Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship in memory of Terry Goins, a renowned athlete from Monroe, is awarded to graduating Seniors from Monroe and Ida High Schools who are pursuing a degree at a college, university, community college or trade school.

Thomas Fox Scholarship

Endowed by Thomas Fox, this fund provides a scholarship to a graduating senior of any Monroe County high school who plans to study computer science or computer information technology.

Thomas and Rosella Day / ACS Scholarship

Endowed by Airport Community Schools to provide scholarships to graduating seniors of Airport High School.

William and Edith Thompson Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by Noelle Duvall, Kym Sieler, and Keith Duvall, this scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors at Monroe High School enrolling in any university or college.
