General Charitable Funds have been established by donors to support a broad range of charitable activities in Monroe County. Grants from these funds are at the discretion of the Board of Trustees.
The General Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of Monroe County.
Supported by the public at large. The people of Monroe County donate to this fund when they want to support a range of charitable programs and projects.
Herman F. Gertz Memorial Fund.
Endowed by Alice Frank as a memorial to her father, and by the Herman & Irene Gertz Foundation. The Herman F. Gertz Memorial Fund supports a variety of charitable programs in Monroe County, with an emphasis on those which promote family values.
The Harry R. McGovern Charitable Fund.
Endowed by Ace Paper Products Company to honor Mr. McGovern's retirement. Like the General Endowment Fund, grants support a wide range of charitable activities.
Field of Interest Funds focus on an area of interest or an issue of concern to the donor. These funds are often established as a memorial to a loved one to support a cause that was meaningful to them.
Altrusa Literacy Fund.
This fund, which supports literacy programs and projects, was endowed by Altrusa International of Monroe County.
The Children's Campers Fund.
This fund, which supports the Morocco United Brethren in Christ Church's campers fund, was endowed by an anonymous donor.
Dundee Area Fund for Youth.
Established by Diamond Electric Manufacturing Company, this fund supports programs and projects for youth in Dundee Township.
Catharine Gibson Fine Arts Fund.
Endowed by gifts from Mary K. Daume, the fund benefits the field of fine art. Grants are at the discretion of the Board of Trustees.
Mary A. Hauser Hypertension-Polycythemia Fund.
Endowed by William E. Hauser and his family as a memorial to wife and mother, Mary Hauser. The fund supports organizations and programs which concentrate on diseases of hypertension, with first priority for grants given to promoting a cure and/or educating the public about polycythemia. The endowment of this fund created a source of help for those suffering from this disease where once there was nothing.
As Mr. Hauser said when he opened this fund, "It may be small...but it's a beginning." This is why the Community Foundation exists ... so you can support programs which are meaningful to you.
Heritage Resources Fund. For the Community Development or capacity needs of the MC community for the purposes of the Heritage Resources which include: Cultural (Maritime Heritage as part of the Port Cities), Historic (activities involving the River Raisin Battlefield, Natural (preservation of the Monroe Marshes in cooperation with the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge), and recreational (waterfront activities to include Blueways and Greenways initiatives, i.e. trails, kayaking, canoeing and like activities) capacity needs.
Raymond C. Kehres Senior Citizens Fund.
Endowed by Mr. Kehres, and supported by those who admired him, this fund provides grants which support programs and agencies enhancing the quality of life for seniors.
Kellogg Youth Fund.
This fund was endowed by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation through a challenge grant, matching donations from the people of Monroe County. The fund is administered by the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) who award grants to organizations, programs and projects which improve the quality of life for youth in Monroe County.
Bedford Kellogg Youth Fund. This fund was endowed by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation through a challenge grant, matching donations from the people of Bedford. The fund is administered by the Bedford Youth Advisory Council (YAC) who award grants to organizations, programs and projects which improve the quality of life for youth in Bedford County.
Kiwanis Club of Monroe North Fund for Youth.
The fund was endowed by the group of the same name. Earnings from the fund support programs and projects for youth throughout Monroe County.
Lotus Fountain Maintenance Fund
The fund was endowed by the people of Monroe County with the remaining funds after the construction of the Lotus Fountain in Loranger Square in downtown Monroe, MI, a Special Project of the Community Foundation of Monroe County. Earnings are used to help maintain the fountain for the enjoyment of the people of Monroe County.
Elizabeth Upham McWebb "Little Brown Bear" Fund.
Endowed by the Trustees of the Community Foundation of Monroe County and with a major grant from the C. S. and Marion F. McIntyre Foundation to honor Monroe's own "Aunt Bett" McWebb, this fund supports programs which encourage children to read books.
Monroe County Cemetery Preservation Fund.
This fund provides for maintenance, repair, restoration of monuments, beautification, etc. of historic cemeteries in Monroe County.
Monroe County Environmental Fund.
Earnings from this fund support programs and projects which improve the environment and/or support environmental education.
Monroe County Healthy Youth Healthy Seniors Fund.
This fund was endowed by the 1999 Tobacco Settlement Agreement through a program created by the Council of Michigan Foundations. This fund will provide grants to a variety of organizations and programs which enhance the health of Youth (under age 18) and Seniors (65 and older).
Monroe County History Fund.
This fund supports projects which enhance the historic heritage of Monroe County.
Monroe County ISD Special Children's Fund.
This fund supports programs which provide for the needs of Special Children, whether "gifted" or suffering from a physical, mental, or learning disability.
Monroe County Monument Preservation Fund.
Grants from this fund provide for the restoration and preservation of historical monuments in Monroe County.
Monroe County Shelter Fund.
Endowed by the Monroe County Realtor's Association, this fund supports agencies and organizations serving the needs of homeless individuals and families.
Russell and Patricia Wills Fund for Job Education and Training.
Endowed by the Trustees of the Community Foundation to honor Mr. Wills' retirement, this fund supports programs to retrain displaced workers.
Salow Family Endowment Fund.
Endowed by the family of Winnifred and James Salow to support capital expenditures which will benefit Monroe County, whether for new projects or the improvement of existing projects, excluding routine maintenance.
Russell and Patricia Wills Fund for Job Education and Training.
Endowed by the Trustees of the Community Foundation to honor Mr. Wills' retirement, this fund supports programs to retrain displaced workers.
Agency Funds are created by other charitable organizations or individual donors for the purpose of providing support to a particular organization or cause. The Fund generates income, and hopefully, grows over time. Like a savings account, a permanent fund for an organization can provide a reliable source of additional income each year.
The Humane Society of Monroe County Fund.
Earnings from this fund are to provide a means for the Humane Society to be to operate into the future. The funds are to be distributed yearly to help with operating expenses.
L.I.F.E. Fund (Living Independence for Everyone).
Earnings from this fund are presently reinvested into the endowment. When fully endowed, earnings from the fund will be distributed to L.I.F.E.
George W. Romney United Way of Monroe County Volunteer Action Center Fund.
Earnings from this fund are distributed annually to the United Way Volunteer Action Center for volunteerism in Monroe County.
World Wars Monument Fund.
Endowed by the World Wars II Association, earnings from this fund are for maintenance of the World Wars Monument.
Donor Advised Funds are established when donors want to be actively involved by recommending grants to be given.
Damon C. Meyers Youth Hockey Fund.
Endowed in 1999 by George C. Meyers, this fund benefits non-profit youth hockey organizations through the purchase of equipment (with focus on goalie equipment), with special attention to those who otherwise could not afford the equipment to play.
•Administration Endowment
The Robert J. Duffey Administration Endowment Fund was created and endowed by Robert J. Duffey to support the work of the Community Foundation of Monroe County.
•Scholarship Funds
Scholarship Funds can be established by any person who would like to support the education of a student or students at any level. Scholarships are the only grants the Community Foundation makes to individuals.
Ahadi Women in Science Scholarship.
Endowed by Dr. Soudabeh Ahadi, this fund provides an annual scholarship to a female graduating senior of any Monroe County high school who is entering any field of science.
Airport Community Schools Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by Airport Community Schools, this fund will provide scholarships to graduates of Airport High School.
Brent Ansted Memorial Scholarship Fund
endowed by the Ansted and Uller family to provide scholarships to graduating Seniors of Bedford High School pursuing a degree in the Liberal Arts anywhere within the US. Preference will be given to those students pursuing the following fields: Computer Design, Graphic Design, Culinary Arts, Photography and Music. A sample portfolio should be included with the essay.
Geri Antonelli Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by the Antonelli Family, this fund will provide scholarships to students from St. Charles Grade School grades 1-7 are welcome to complete an application.
Bare-Walworth Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by Richard and Judith Bare, this fund supports other scholarship programs.
Christy Carducci Memorial Scholarship Fund. MPS graduating Senior and participated in the music dept for at least two years. Also allows MPS Music Dept to attend the Toledo Opera.
Community Foundation of Monroe County Scholarship.
This fund was endowed by the people of Monroe County, and provides annual scholarships to outstanding graduates of Monroe County high schools who have demonstrated community service.
Thomas and Rosella Day Memorial Scholarship Endowed.
Endowed by Airport Community Schools to provide scholarships to graduating seniors of Airport High School.
Daimler Chrysler Corporation Fund.
This fund was endowed by Daimler Chrysler Corporation. The money will provide five $1,000 scholarships for five years to Dundee students pursuing vocational or technical training.
Jonna D. Dusseau Memorial Scholarship.
This fund was endowed by Monroe Cablevision, Inc., and grants an annual scholarship to a graduating senior of any Monroe County high school pursuing a degree in broadcast communications or journalism.
Mary Daume Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by Mary Daume to provide scholarships to Monroe County residents enrolled in a graduate school of library science.
Rich Duvall Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by the family of Rich Duvall to provide scholarships to graduating seniors of Flat Rock High School.
Thomas Fox Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by Thomas Fox, this fund provides a scholarship to a graduating senior of any Monroe County high school who plans to study computer science or computer information technology.
Grattan & Stephen T. Gray Scholarship.
Endowed by the employees of the Monroe Evening News at the time of the completion of their buyout of the paper, this fund provides scholarships to graduates of Monroe County High Schools and high schools in Gibralter, New Boston, Huron, Milan or Flat Rock who are entering the field of journalism.
Dr. Annetta Kelley Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by Dr. Kelley, this fund provides scholarships to 8th grade graduates from St. John's School who will be attending S.M.C.C. High School in Monroe. Recipients shall be based on their grade scores and leadership qualities, resulting in achievement potential.
Milt & Sally Knabusch Ministerial & Parochial School Teacher Endowed Scholarship Fund
endowed by Milt Knabusch for those students in Monroe County who have expressed a desire to pursue full-time careers working in churches and schools of any Lutheran denomination as Pastors, Teachers, Deaconess, Family Life Minister, Directors of Christian Education or Parish Lay Specialist, Assistant or Minister.
Thelma M. and Joseph N. LaHood, Sr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by Dr. Barbara J. LaHood, this fund provides scholarships to St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School.
LaRocca Family Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by the LaRocca Family, this fund provides scholarships to graduating Seniors at Summerfield High School.
The Marilyn Iott Memorial Scholarship Fund.
This fund was endowed by the family of Marilyn Iott. The fund awards annual scholarships to graduating seniors of Deerfield and Summerfield High Schools.
B.D. & Jane E. McIntyre Scholarship.
This fund was endowed by the foundation of the same name and Mr. Charles E. McIntyre III. The fund awards annual scholarships to graduates of Monroe County high schools who have been accepted by and are attending Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan.
Merel F. Keck and Maggie M. Keck Scholarship Fund.
Endowed by Merel and Maggie Keck, this fund provides scholarships to female grads attending MCCC nursing program, graduating seniors pursuing a finance degree from a University of Michigan, and a male grad entering into the Southern Baptist Seminary.
Monroe County Bar Association Scholarship.
This fund was endowed by the Monroe County Bar Association. The fund provides scholarships to Monroe County graduates and/or residents who have been accepted by and are attending an accredited school of law in the United States.
MSM Scholarship
is for St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School grades (K-7) and shall be a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish of Erie, MI for one year or has attended the school for one year.
Rewarding Academic Excellence (RAE) Enrichment Scholarship
is for students in grades 3-6 who are interested in pursuing, in greater depth, academic subjects beyond those available in the classroom. Awards of up to $250 per student are available. Students may apply for an opportunity that takes place during the school year or in the summer.
Rewarding Academic Excellence (RAE) Service Scholarship
is a $250 college scholarship and a $25 gift certificate to The Book Nook To Be Awarded to up to Two (2) Monroe Public Schools 8th Grade Students who are members of National Junior Honor Society. This scholarship is designed to promote leadership in young students through commitment to service. By contributing 25 hours of time volunteering to help others, students will improve the local community, develop leadership skills, and demonstrate the value of positive role-modeling. At the end of the experience, applicants are expected to write an essay sharing insights.
Rewarding Academic Excellence (RAE) “The Sky’s the Limit” College Scholarship
$500 To Be Awarded to One (1) 11th Grade student at Monroe High School.
Roy Sanders Memorial Scholarship Fund. Attending St. Charles Grade School and be a parishioner of St. Charles, St. Anne, or St. Patrick's Parishes.
Summerfield Scholarship.
This fund was endowed by the Petersburg Alumni Association and is awarded annually to outstanding graduates of Summerfield High School.
Spencer and Lucille Wagar Memorial Scholarship Fund.
This fund was endowed by Mrs. Christine Stevens to honor her parents. The fund awards annual scholarships to graduates of Monroe High School who have been accepted by and are attending the University of Michigan.
Gregory Wing Memorial Scholarship Fund.
This fund was endowed by Edward and Andrea Wing to provide scholarships to students at St. Charles Catholic Grade School (kindergarten thru 8th grade) and the Sacred Heart Major Seminary for ordained priests for student loan debt.
Ryan Wolniewicz Memorial Hockey Scholarship Fund.
This fund was endowed by the 2003-04 Bedford Hockey Team, Parents, Alumni & Friends to honor the memory of Ryan Wolniewicz. This fund awards to a Bedford High School varsity hockey player.
Dorothy Manausso-Wuest, Gerald A. Wuest and Jay Wuest Memorial Scholarship.
This fund, endowed by Mrs. Dorothy Manausso-Wuest, awards scholarships annually to outstanding graduates of St. Mary Catholic Central High School. Mrs. Wuest passed away in 2000, but the fund will continue to provide annual scholarships.
